故事开始于1967年，无辜可怜的小女孩爱丽丝（Milly Archer 饰）淹死在了黑水湖之中，这让她的母亲露丝（茱蒂·惠特克 Jodie Whittaker 饰）和父亲保罗（Jamie King 饰）陷入了绝望之中。虽然很多年过去，但露丝依然没有走出丧女的阴影，她总觉得爱丽丝的死并不是一出单纯的意外，她和保罗之间的关系也降到了冰点。 在爱丽丝的坟墓前，露丝捡到了一个可疑的女人利兹（詹妮弗·亨内斯 Jennifer Hennessy 饰），她的存在更加坚定了露丝的想法。对于保罗来说，日子也十分的艰难，因为每当他想和妻子亲近时，总能够在妻子的脸上看见爱丽丝的影子。
