年老的浮士德自感青春不再，痛骂科学和信仰无法帮自己解决衰老的痛苦，两度企图自杀。魔鬼孟菲斯特（Georges Méliès 乔治•梅里爱 饰）察觉到浮士德的苦恼，幻化出玛格丽特的形象引诱浮士德签下出卖灵魂以换取青春的合约。 孟菲斯特安排两人相遇，浮士德馈赠玛格丽特整盒珠宝，两人坠入情网。但浮士德随后抛弃玛格丽特为自己生的孩子。此举激怒玛格丽特的哥哥瓦伦汀，两个男人展开决斗，瓦伦汀惨死剑下。痛苦的玛格丽特祈求上帝的帮助，却在祷告中遇见孟菲斯特，惊吓昏迷的玛格丽特最终升上了天国……
