影片主人公是位水手，在海上漂泊了整整20年。他是个孤独的酒鬼，没有任何朋友，和他睡觉的女人也都是为了钱。所有的欲望都已经从他的人生消逝。在一次去往“世界尽头”乌斯怀亚的航行中，他向船长告假拜访了这个白雪皑皑的童年时生活的小城。他发现，原来自己的老母亲还在人世。他还有另外一位亲人，正是后者一直在照顾着母亲。这位从不相信任何人的水手，会有人走进他的生命里吗？
