1945年8月，美军一架B-29轰炸机在广岛投掷一颗原子弹，不仅造成多人死伤惨剧，也将当地夷为平地。面对到处断桓残壁、医疗物资缺乏惨景，当地德国席门神父卷起衣袖协助日本人安置，而广岛医院仅剩的原医生则设法利用病人症状、血液与病人距离原子弹远近作为研究重点，设法找出治疗方式。随后，日本天皇藉由广播发表投降宣言，但仍无法停止日本人的悲恸，对美国人的愤恨…
